My Design Style *so far*
When it comes to my own style when decorating, I feel like it’s a blend of a whole bunch of different styles. Maximalism, Indie, Bohemian, etc. are all things I would say describe my style and my room, currently.
One thing that I can’t live without, in regards to styling a room, are lights. That may seem obvious to people, as most have lights in their rooms, but I’m a very firm believer in ambient lighting, and I loathe overhead lighting. Also, I really like using app-controlled colored light bulbs in my lights that allow me to have regular white light, but also fun and funky colors as well, that allow me to relax and switch the vibe of my room.
Another thing that I always have, no matter what house, apartment, dorm, etc. I’m living in, is plants. I absolutely love plants and believe that they are a really good decorating tool, and they also are like an air purifier, two in one. They also add color to a room and make it seem alive. I have an aloe plant, a monstera deliciosa, some ivy, and succulents as well. They fill up space while looking good.
As a college student, I need a desk, so for my room, I decided to go a little bit more minimalist/mid-century modern with the design of my desk while I was picking it out. Having a space to be able to sit down and work at my computer, write in my notebooks, eat, get around at, study, etc. is extremely helpful and important to me.
When I was picking out the decor for my room, I tried to incorporate more natural and organic colors as well. I chose a plain white comforter and sheets, wooden and white desk and chair, a tan and black designed rug, gold lamps with white shades, my white metal TV stand, etc. I incorporated neutral colors as my kind of theme because it allowed the pops of color I do have, like my plants and my lights, to stick out more and become more noticeable.
Another thing I really couldn’t live without would be my mirror. Having a mirror, whether it be a full length floor mirror like mine, or multiple different sizes, etc., mirrors open up spaces and make them seem bigger. And who doesn’t need to look in the mirror every once on a while?
Art is also something that I try to incorporate into my room design, whether it be pictures, paintings, pottery and clay, my friends and families art, etc. Art helps to give my space a creative energy to it, which I enjoy.
Also, I use everyday things, like my cameras, my candles, etc. to fill empty spaces, which makes them look cool and they’re easier to get to.
All in all, I don’t claim to be an interior designer, in fact, I don’t even really think my space is where I want it at the moment. But it's so important to create a space that energizes you, calms you, that ultimately creates your vibe.
